How to Identify IBS Triggers?

How did you learn what foods trigger your IBS? Is it obvious when a food impacts you, like do your symptoms happen right away, or could eating something affect you later in the day or the next day? As I scroll this app, it seems like time of day and stress also impacts IBS, and I'm about to try cutting out a food for a week to see if it impacts me, but I'm nervous I won't even be able to tell if my gut acts up regardless 🥴

There's a diet called low FODMAP. I wouldn't try it without seeing someone first, but that shows you what foods it could be that's triggering it. Gluten and dairy tend to be the biggest culprits. 🤗

It's usually about 30 minutes for me, but it can be as long as a few hours if I've eaten a lot of other stuff or not much of my triggers. My main triggers are sugar, coffee, and dairy, so if I drink coffee on an empty stomach I notice within 15-30 minutes.

I am still trying to figure this out myself but so far I have found that gluten, dairy, sugar, and caffeine all seem not to sit well with me. I am considering talking to my doctor about doing an elimination diet to see if there are other foods that trigger me because I still seem to be getting sick a lot. I seem to get it worst in the morning after I eat breakfast or have my morning tea from whatever I may have eaten the night before. But there are also times that my symptoms start to kick in within 30 minutes. And sometimes it happens in the middle of the day for no reason at all. It's been very confusing and I'm sure I still have a ways to go before I figure it all out and what my body needs but I'm here for healing and I'm here for the journey.

I have severe IBS, I did the elimination diet. I was lucky, my daughter was diagnosed as lactose intolerant at 9 months. Even 1 m&m would make her sick. She outgrew it, I got worse. I always hated milk and 30 years ago there were no substitutes. I took it out of my diet back then. The thing to remember is all milk products. Look it up, whey, casein and other things are even in crackers.! I read all labels. Don’t forget butter too. I am stable and can have almond and coconut substitutes. They have soy margarine, soy milk, coconut milk and oat milk. Ice Cream, sour cream and cream cheese substitutes. If I eat milk, I get horrible cramps in 20 min. It is usually hidden in mash potatoes when I eat out. Pancakes, cheese and other foods you need to watch out when you eat out. Life can be frustrating but once you eliminate a food group and feel better you will be elated. Good Luck.
