Experience with Spironolactone for Hair Loss?

What was everyone’s experience like with spironolactone? I’m a 20 y/o woman losing hair from my hairline, growing hair everywhere else, and dealing w cystic acne so I’m about to ask my doctor for it. I’ve always been naturally pretty strong and muscular and I’m kinda scared that the medication would change that, but losing my hair is kinda the deciding factor.

I started spironolactone in October of last year! I’m 26 y/o and workout constantly and very toned/muscular. I haven’t noticed any issues with weight/muscle endurance or how I look. I think I lost water weight since it’s a diuretic and I pee a lot! but other than that it’s been great!

I’ve been using it for cystic acne for about 4 months and I did see a noticeable change in my skin. However, I’m one of the people who gets the unwanted side effects of drugs and it gave me diarrhea, I began to vomit on occasion, and I started to experience dizziness. That being said I stopped recently because I couldn’t deal with the side effects.

I was put on it 3 years ago for hidradenitis suppurative and acne. It's worked awesome for me. At first, my dose was a little too high, and it caused spotting, lightheadedness and nausea when I didn't eat/drink for a while, and pretty extreme dry mouth. That was in combination with combination birth control. I went down 50mg and now my only side effect is peeing a lot and pretty severe PMS-like symptoms for a few weeks if I screw up taking my birth control (which didn't happen when I screwed up on bc without the Spiro). As for hair loss, I tend to be really sensitive to stress and medications and get hair loss as a side effect, and spironolactone didn't do that at all. It's probably helped me keep some of my hair since lots of other stuff has made it fall over the last two years. I haven't found anything that's made it harder to gain muscle or look toned or anything if that's something you're concerned about. Good luck!

I have taken spironolactone for several years. It has worked wonders as a water pill, for hypertension and also decreased my facial hair. The only side affect for me is the upset stomach when I first started to take it. Not anymore. No change in muscle mass and no other changes. It works for me. Good luck!

I’ve been on it about two years. Haven’t noticed any crazy side effects from it. It has greatly improved my acne. I never break out anymore.
