Signs & symptoms

Signs and symptoms of ankyloglossia include: - Difficulty lifting the tongue moving it from side to side - Trouble sticking out the tongue - Heart shaped or notched looking tongue

Diagnosis

Ankyloglossia is typically diagnosed during a physical exam. There is screening tool that your healthcare provider might use to score the appearance and avility to use for infants.

Treatment

Ankyloglossia can resolved without any intervention and does not require treatment. In other cases, a procedurecalled "frenotomy" can be done. During the procedure the doctor examines the lingual frenulum and then uses sterile scissors to snip the frenulum free.
