Signs & symptoms

Benign thyroid neoplasm is not always symptomatic, but it could interfere with the person’s ability to speak, swallow, or breath. If there is hyperthyroidism, symptoms may include fatigue, weight loss, irritability, mood swings, excessive sweating and heat sensitivity.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of benign neoplasms of the thyroid gland starts with physical examination of the neck area. Then, blood tests and ultrasound may be performed. A fine needle aspiration is used to get a biopsy from the nodule.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the size and location of the lesion, and the age and symptoms of the patient. Patients may receive thyroxine therapy to suppress thyroid-stimulating hormone, but then they have to stay supervised. If the nodule is symptomatic, the throid, or a part of it, is surgically removed.
