by Alike Medical Team ∙ Updated on June 13, 2023

General

Trichorrhexis nodosa is a common disorder with weak points in the hair, resulting in hair loss. Though there are inherited forms, the most common type of TN is due to physical or chemical trauma to the hair. Individuals with curly hair of African origin are more likely to suffer from this condition

Signs & symptoms

Hairs tend to break mid-shaft after minimal manipulation. You may have shorter hair on some parts of your scalp. A white node on your hair may indicate splits in the hair. You also might observe breakage at the junction of processed and new hair growth close to the scalp, especially at the back of the head and nape of the neck. In addition, you may experience itching, redness, and soreness on your scalp.

Diagnosis

the diagnosis of TN is based on the patient's history and his/her physical examination. The dermatologist will examine the hair and the scalp of the patient in order to determine the severity of the disorder.

Treatment

Heat should not be applied to the hair more than once a week. Protect your hair with conditioning shampoos and moisturizing conditioners. Avoid use of hair products containing alcohol.
