Vasomotor rhinitis

Vasomotor rhinitis refers to a condition which is characterized by dilatation of blood vessels inside the nose, leading to swelling and congestion. It is not completely understood what causes these blood vessels to dilate but some triggers have been identified. These triggers include irritants (perfumes, smog, smoke), dry weather, viral infections, spicy food, some medications, overuse of nasal sprays, pregnancy, hypothyroidism and stress.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms include runny nose, stuffy nose and postnasal drip.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include allergy tests to rule out an allergy, and a CT scan of the sinuses.

Treatment

Treatment may include saline nasal spray, decongestants, corticosteroid sprays, antihistamine nasal sprays, and anticholinergic nasal spray. In rare cases, surgery is recommended.,
