Living with ADHD and Caffeine Intolerance: Feeling Alone and Untreatable

I have diagnosed ADHD, but I also live with what I refer to as a caffeine intolerance. Unlike most people, even my family, my heart rate increases radically while my focus/alertness/awakeness has little to no change. This wouldn't be so bad, but stimulant medication reacts much the same way. I've been feeling alone and untreatable lately. Does anyone else experience this problem? I would love to hear from you <3

Sorry you’re experiencing this! Living the caffeine-less life is hard!!! You’re certainly not alone. I’m no doctor but I’ve heard many stories of people finally reaching a breakthrough in treatments. Don’t give up hope!!!!

I've had this for a while it was so bad the smallest amount would throw me into a panick attach. I would pour a small cup of coffee and a ful cup of water and sip one then the other try that. If it still hurts you drink more water.

If you want to try caffeine I would suggest you start with something very gentle like green tea and if that did appeal to you you might later try something else but don’t try coffee

I definitely experienced that for a while and I’m not sure why I don’t anymore. Maybe I’m older and more tired 💀 or maybe I’m actually addressing the brain fog and gloom brought on by depression

There are also caffeine alternatives- mudwtr (? I think) is like a tea that’s supposed to perk you up

Have you tried non stimulant medication? I understand stimulants would work the best treating ADHD, I personally would love to try them just to see the difference with my current meds But the antidepressant I take, isn't that bad either, it looks like it has helped a lot and though it takes a bit to build up, it doesn't have a wear off period like other stimulants so no "after 4 mt ADHD becomes unbearable" or needing to take multiple doses a day to negate the wear off

I have! I was on Stratera for nearly a month with no results. The things that don't give me chest pain don't touch my brain it feels like sometimes 😥

Caffeine and stimulant calm me. There are other meds for adhd...not stimulant.

Don't give up untill you find the right medication to fit your brain ❤️ everyone's brain is unique. Even if we all suffer on here with ADHD not just one medication fits all brains.
