Anxiety Diagnosis: How Long Did It Take You?

Hello. I’ve been suffering with anxiety for about 9 years but I was just diagnosed last week by my primary care doctor and referred to psychiatry. How long did it take for you to get diagnosed and was it by primary care or psychiatry?

I’ve basically had it my whole life, just used the words “shy” and “quiet” as a kid. When I was 16 I went to a pediatrician and he saw how my mood was and recommended psychiatry.

my primary care doctor diagnosed me in about a month (maybe less) because I wasn't able to find a therapist but my anxiety was becoming severe rapidly so I really needed meds because it was unbearable and I was having attacks every day

My anxiety is triggered by hormone imbalance, ADHD and poor gut health. Usually best to find what is happening behind the panic attacks

I went to a psychiatrist and he diagnosed me in 1997. My family dr told me I was just stressed 🤦🏻‍♀️

I was diagnosed a few times with major depression since I was 13. When I was 26, I was diagnosed with PTSD despite talking to my previous therapist about my constant nightmares and triggers. I have gone through many therapists and finally have found one I like and trust.

To be very honest it is hard for me to remember but I believe I was diagnosed by a neurologist when I was 8 but I had symptoms and went to therapy at the age of 5.

I was able to see one within a few weeks of being referred to by my doctor. I dont know if its necessary but it does help to have a doctors referral.

I started dealing with severe anxiety and depression when I was about 5 years old, after many traumatic abuse incidents, which was 13 years ago. I tried to hide it the best I could, and my parents didn't really care about my mental health. So I never talked about it with a doctor until I turned 18. I was diagnosed by a psychiatrist with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Anorexia, and Social Anxiety Disorder in March 2021.
