Dealing with Sensory Overload as an Autistic Person

Hi so, I was just recently diagnosed with autism and I was wondering if anyone else has trouble with multiple noises going on at once? I feel overwhelmed by lots of auditory sensations. I used to think I just had anxiety but I suspect it has something to do with the autism diagnosis. Any feedback helps :)

I used to think my sensory overwhelm was anxiety too! I have a really hard time when there's a lot of sounds going on so I usually take my headphones everywhere. I also got the loop experience earplugs but I don't like that they make it so I can hear my breathing loudly.

Oh yes!! My biggest one that I experience is in the kitchen. Someone is talking, someone is crinkling a food wrapper, and the TV is going as well ☺️

That’s called sensory overload. It happens to lots of people and is totally normal. Autistic people experience it more. Noise cancelling headphones or ear plugs can help. Sometimes taking a break somewhere quiet helps, it really just depends on the person.

I have these noise cancelling earplugs that help, called Loops. Theyre small so I can take them anywhere and not really noticeable

When I go to public places e.g. shopping malls, I feel myself overwhelmed with so much noises, so I would just cover up my ears, use headphones, or find a quiet corner to calm myself down. Hope that helps! ❤️
