Dealing with Intense Guilt and Shame on the Autism Spectrum

Does anyone else on the spectrum experience guilt and shame very intensely? I feel like whenever I feel ashamed of myself it becomes overwhelming to the point where It’s all I can think about it and I will make myself sick stressing over whatever it is I am ashamed of - even if it’s something very small. It becomes a full body sensation, not just a mental thing. Are there any tips for dealing with shame?

I'd say this try reminding yourself every day it's not your fault. Do things that make you smile.

I still will be filled with dread from something that happend in elementary school, it's a awful experience. The panic that comes with it is truly painful. What only works for me is scrolling through my phone, deep breathing and constant reminders of why I shouldn't feel ashamed. You've got this!

Ugh ✋🏼 100% I'm in a long healing journey with C-PTSD and rarely have panic attacks anymore. Being on the spectrum, though, that point of overwhelm is so easy to reach and shame is one of the huge ones that can demolish me. I have a lot of coping techniques from my years far less stable. If I make even small mistakes and it hits me just right, I have to find a closed in space and deep breathe for a while. Pressure points in my hands can also help as these panic shame moments usually occur at work. Usually only works for a short period of time and I just have to repeat periodically. The feeling won't completely pass for at least a full day.

Yep. My dad loved to use guilt and shame as a weapon against me too. It’s taken years of therapy and reassurance to even begin recovering from it. I feel guilt so intensely that I get chest pain and heart palpitations from it. It’s entirely all-consuming and I usually need a couple days to recover if I start feeling it.
