How do you know if your bipolar meds are working?

How do you know if your bipolar meds are working? I'm on aripiprazole. Have been for about a year, but i don't really know how i'm supposed to feel. I just want to hear what others' experience is with it.

What was the difference though? I thought i noticed a huge difference especially at first, but my therapist thinks i'm still too depressed (granted, she didn't know me before meds)...to the point she's not even sure i'm actually bipolar. Is it supposed to get rid of depression or just reduce the symptoms? Is it weird to still occasionally deal with suicidality?

I have some days where i feel level now, and still experience depression. She finds both odd... Seems to think i should either never be level or never be depressed
