Cancelling Therapy Appointments: How Many Chances Should I Give?

I started therapy the end of Sept. cognitive behavior therapy for generalized anxiety disorder and panic attacks. I am supposed to go weekly. I have seen her 4 times. the last 4 weeks she cancels last minute for an emergency. I am trying to be understanding, but when the next available appt is will be 6 weeks since I last saw her. would you find someone new? how many chances should I give her before giving up...

I’d definitely look for someone new

Has she been helpful at all? If you feel like you haven't made any progress with her, then maybe ask for a referral?

I'd change providers my psych does cbt for ptsd and depression and he explained how serious it is to go weekly or every two weeks to be able to actually have the cbt work

@mollyweasley, this place was my referral from my PCM. My psychiatrist gave me a huge list and said here pick one. I get overwhelmed with that list because I have to filter through ones who specialize in anxiety, are female, don't bring religion into therapy (I'm not a religious person) and take new patients. It's a big list and I get overwhelmed with it.

The only thing we have really done in the 4 appt I had was what apps are best for meditation and trying to break down certain anxious thoughts. I don't feel it's very helpful, especially with so many cancelations now.

Do we have the same therapist?

Look for someone new, I’ve never had a therapist cancel on me

She doesn't seem like she is connecting with you, or being helpful. The last thing you need with anxiety is to have to have anxiety over the thing that's supposed to help you with it. I would get a new therapist.

@eastcoaster, that would be a small world! Lol

She cancelled four meetings for an emergency each time?? Sounds weird…

Hi, I think 4 sessions in a row that are canceled is a bit excessive. I would look for a new therapist for myself.

I would definately look for someone new. That's ridiculous

I would also look for a new therapist. Uncertainty regarding having the session or not each time just adds more unnecessary stress for you, you deserve better care!

Thank you all for your input. I cancelled all future appointments with her and am starting to look for another.

I would find someone new but if you really want keep her as a back up. She may start losing clients and end up having more times.
