Comparing Fluoxetine and Sertraline for Depression

how does fluoxetine compare to sertraline? I'm being moved to fluoxetine as sertraline isn't really doing anything for me and I'm just wondering about other people's responses to it

I haven’t taken Sertraline but have been on Fluoxetine for years. It is a very slow acting medication. Slower than all the other SSRI’s I believe. Hang in there. Took me 4-6 weeks before I felt improvement when going up from 20 to 40mg.

Out of curiosity what is the main thing you / your doctor is trying to treat? For me it was GAD. General Anxiety Disorder. But fluoxetine (Prozac) has a good track record for treating depression and even OCD.

it's mainly for depression, I also have anxiety though so I'm also worried it's going to make that worse as sertraline was meant to help with that but made me feel absolutely numb

Well I am NOT a doctor but I can speak from my experience. And internet research 🤪. Fluoxetine is known as an activating SSRI. Compared to others that are more Sedating in nature. This is benefit depression. I felt this early on as a combination of increased energy. Fluoxetine has been a life saver for me but let me be real with you, the first 4-6 weeks is a ride. But don’t give up on it. Many do before feeling any benefits. I definitely do not feel numb in it. I feel very normal. But the adjustment phase kind had me all over for a bit. That is normal. Hang in there, and feel free to message me anytime for encouragement.

From what I've read, escitalopram is better than sertraline (I take escitalopram and I sware by it). Escitalopram is not to be confused with citalopram (2 very different affects - citalopram made me worse).
