Considering EMDR for PTSD: Has anyone tried it?

Hi guys, I've been told over the years I might have PTSD or CPTSD and I'm just now starting to confront these issues. My therapist wants me to try EMDR but I'm scared. Has anyone tried it? what was it like? did it help? thanks!

Yeah I have done it, it is much better than any traditional therapy. Going to start doing it again here soon.

I've heard it could cause flashbacks and increased anxiety for a while, do you agree? I'm worried about that

I did not experience that. Everything has a risk associated to it, you just have to decide if the possible benefits outweigh the risks, for me it does as my PTSD ca be crippling. I also try to not live in fear.

As someone who's done pretty extensive EMDR, I think it's well worth the risks. While I did, at times, have flashbacks, they decreased the more EMDR I did. It helped me greatly ❤️

EMDR was extremely helpful but make sure you are doing it with a therapist you really trust and don't be afraid to talk to them about your concerns. It can be very intense and emotional. My last therapist would push me to do EMDR even when I wasn't in a good place mentally and that really sucked. You have to have good self-care routines outside sessions for it to be successful.

I see. I'll have to wait then because I need to find someone new that can do it...

I’ve tried it via YouTube. DON’T do it via YouTube. Go to a trusted therapist!

emdr is really intense during and just after the sessions, but in the long run was very helpful for me. triggers are less triggering, flashbacks less intense and less frequent, and if it starts getting bad again they can help you set up a “safe place” that you can program your body to relax when you put yourself there in your mind… if that made sense? it was really helpful for me 😅
