Considering Therapy: Seeking Advice

Just joined and not sure what to expect here but I am finally at a point where I'm thinking about reaching out to a psychiatrist or therapist. I'm not on anxiety meds and being on meds makes me nervous. What are some thoughts?

Please please please reach out to some form of counseling if you can! If you’re nervous about it or want to talk about what to expect please message me! I personally think that everyone should be in therapy. You don’t need to have a medical diagnosis for talking to someone with professional experience and who doesn’t expect anything from you to be helpful.

I totally understand the hesitation with meds. I feel the same. I believe they are good things for other ppl but for some reason have a hard time accepting that i should probably use them myself. Look into some herbal remedies as well. I will say also that it is important you feel you can be vulnerable with your counselor or therapist. Ive implicitly trusted new therapists that i did not end up feeling dafe with. Its ok to be picky and not all therapists are amazing. Feel it out and trust your gut.

Hi. Yes I was also in your place before. My anxiety has gotten way too high and I was also thinking of seeking help from a therapist/counselor, but I wasn’t really sure either bc my parents didn’t really liked the idea, and then they supported me and said if I want to see a professional than I got their support. and I did and it’s been helping me so far. She’s been helping me with coping skills and ways to calm myself down. I recommend looking for a therapist/counselor bc if they helped me they can help you.

Anxiety can be so stressful! Good job reaching out to talk about it, that is HUGE! I hope you are proud of yourself. I agree with therapy as a great option. I feel like counseling has improved the quality of my life and given me ideas on how to cope with my anxiety. It never hurts to at least give it a try. I also take medication and have found that helpful. I have taken medication for a long time, and I feel it helps me. I do know other people who just take it for a shorter period of time and that helps them too. It sounds like you might be nervous about talking to your doctor. Remember, just because you ask your doctor questions about medication, or counseling doesn’t mean you have to take it. You get to decide. Let me know if you have any specific questions about medication.

Try therapy first. You may not need meds just some good coping skills and a place to vent.
