Dealing with a Possible Bowel Obstruction

has anyone had a partial bowel obstruction? I've been in a lot of pain and at the ER yesterday they said I might have one and to come back if it got worse again (they gave me pain meds) the pain is slowly getting worse and I'm really nauseous. I'm trying to talk to an advice nurse on the phone but I've been on hold forever. if anyone has experienced this, did it go away on its own? and if you needed surgery, what was it like? and what was the recovery process like?

Can you help? Connect today

I know someone who passed out on the bathroom floor and woke up in the hospital. In her case, the colon had twisted and became necrotic (dead tissue). Very dangerous condition. I would take myself to the ER, like stat and get CT scan to see what's going on.

Yes I've had a family member they did that to. Sent them home their bowel ruptured and they almost died had to have an awful surgery got infected inside their body from feces they missed while cleaning their insides and was in the hospital with their incision open for months. GO BACK TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM NOW!!! And don't leave till you've had an exray to rule out a bowel blockage. Please go now. Let me know how it turns out. It is life threatening!

She's right. Your bowel is really serious business. You can die from a rupture. Get off hold and go to the ER! Keep us posted.

The normal operation for a bowel obstruction is a very easy operation. As long as you get it taken care of BEFORE it ruptures. It has a fairly easy recovery too.

Yes, I've had a bowel Resection for a different reason (repeated diverticulitis attacks). Your bowel habits will change, but you'll be alive and should recover okay.

A dilation is a very good indicator of a bowel obstruction why would they send you home when you'll need surgery. Your intestines are not made to stretch beyond their capacity which for your small intestine is not very big. And for your big intestine it's not that much more. You cannot judge by the size of your poops either. Your butt stretches but not your intestines!

Yes, back to the ER for you. The pain meds are only going to constipate you and make the pain/situation worse. Please feel better 🙏

update: I'm in the er getting iv fluids and waiting on another scan. I've been told not to eat or drink anything. I am literally full of shit, the doctor is torn between constipation and bowel obstruction but I've never been constipated like this before

I know this is a bit late though I had something called a malrotation, which is somewhat similar. I had a surgery when I was born and was told that my intestines could not not retwist. 6 years later, it did. It was off and on nausea and stomach aches and started out of the blue when I randomly threw up. After that I went to multiple doctors and was told “It’s just a stomach ache”. Finally my mom took me to the doctor and they found my intestines had been twisting up for over a month and were close to rupturing. I had emergency surgery and an appendectomy. It took my mom so much convincing for them to take another look and if she hadn’t been so firm with the doctors (who told us nothing was wrong and we’re sending me home) I most likely would have been killed from a ruptured appendix at 6. Scariest shit in my life, I’m glad it was just severe constipation as embarrassing as that is.

@brokenstardust I am so glad you are ok! Embarrassing or not, a much simpler situation 😊

Glad to see you're okay and it was "just", but severe impaction of your bowels can be serious as well. On read that Elvis had enlarged intestines among, many other ailments. Chronic constipation is no joke. Hey more fiber into yourself, maybe had a probiotic and some fiber products on the market. Do not do too much of a good thing!

All good information. I’m spending my time listening to everyone to see if I can get enlightened. I had an appendectomy at 13 and adhesions as a result. Blockage at 40 with surgery to free my intestines from the scarring. Now at 63 once again thinking I need help again. Feels like a structure or twist. Ibs c is what they thought but now. Maybe a contributor. It’s every day. Miralax and fluids keep me civil! Intestines, when inflamed, swell from the outside to in, narrowing the area for passage. I also try anti-inflammation treatments like ibuprofen and cbd.
