Dealing with Death Anxiety at a Young Age

I've been thinking about how seemingly pointless life is. Im 18 and have severe death anxiety. What can I do to help myself? I am not religious, so no "have faith in God" or anything.

Can you help? Connect today

For me, also non religious I know there's no point in any of this.. so I have to make my own reason for living. For me, the pointless ness for life makes me feel in control of my own future. I'm alive because I want to be. I can choose what to live for! I hope this helped a little

Yeah i definitely relate. You ever read Camus? He said something like "i might as well kill myself as savour a cup of coffee" I've always appreciated that. Since I agree there's no inherent meaning to life, the journey is all there is. For me that means my priority is recovering from complex ptsd, because my trauma adaptations have rendered me unable to experience or enjoy being alive as fully as I want to, and existing feels terrible a lot of the time. I'm hopeful tho! I'm making progress, i believe I'll find other things to live for as I go on

It's taken a lot of therapy and searching but I've found that i find purpose in making a positive impact on others, including art. Like one thing I always try to compliment at least one stranger each time i go out in public

see, my autism does not work well with socializing, I'll probably have a meltdown before I even speak. 😥

I would say find something to love wether it's religious or not! It could be a kitten, just find something that will give you a daily routine and hope in the world. Heck i have a kitten on my lap right now!

I am not going to say have faith in God, but read a Bible. Just try it. Nothing to lose.

I had severe death anxiety after my mom died, when I was about 13-14. It followed me for a long time. I was never able to shake it until I was able to truly come to terms with the fact that it was going to happen, one way or another, and realized how massively my life was being impacted and how paralyzed I was over something I couldn't control.

If you're still in highschool you could try joining school clubs that include your interests. Not only does it look good on your school records, but it also keeps your mind busy If your not in school, you could get a job or volunteer, or find local groups which will also keep you busy. I'm 19 and just started to do this. It can make a big difference in your life. I hope this helps :)

Also not religious after being a devoted Christian for years. The book “love is letting go of fear” really helped me a lot spiritually in a way. It made me realize how contradicting religion is and how all that really matters in life is love. “The Egg” is another good read if you like the idea of reincarnation. I’ve read about and watched YouTube videos of people describing their near death experiences. A common theme was that they felt the most “peace” they’ve ever felt. Some say it was so amazing that they even signed DNR’s in the chance that they ever died again. I have struggled a LOT with this concept. In fact, I think every human being does. So you’re definitely not alone. I try to reframe my thoughts regarding what “purpose” really is and keep an open mind always. Our spiritually is unique to each individual. I personally believe that we are exactly where we need to be, doing exactly what we need to be doing. Experiencing this life for everything it is, good and bad, and appreciating the lessons and memories along the way. There really is no “right” or “fair” way to do life. We are each dealt our hand and travel our own journeys, developing our own perspectives. I like this saying I heard one time when I was pretty low. “You may be ready to give up on life, but life isn’t ready to give up on you.” I took it to mean that even if we don’t know why we’re here, life put us here and maybe it’s not our job to find out why or what the “point” is. I could go on about this forever 😅 I am only a message away if ever you or anyone else would like to talk. Just know that your existence here is valued and that you aren’t alone in your thoughts.

I feel the same way sometimes, I get through the year by looking forward to the next thing that I'm excited about even if it's a few months or a year away at least there is a reason to keep going.

I’ve had death anxiety my whole life. My dad died when he was 25 and I was 3. So I always thought I was going to die young too. Wasn’t till I turned 30 that I thought “okay I’m good” hopefully 😅 had extreme nightmares for many years about going to hell. But that was probably from my grandparents telling us kids things we shouldn’t hear about hell at that young of an age. Grew up Seventh Day Adventist and all of it made me not want anything to do with religion. I am also Agnostic. I don’t think reading the Bible will help you. It will only scare you more. Unless you were able to interpret it for what it really is. Its truly about our bodies nothing more nothing less. This will clarify https://youtu.be/ONcvij_pA-A

I am also non-religious and have Death related anxiety but what I like to do is to think of the positives of death like you won't be in pain, you won't be anxious, you'll have nothing to ever worry about again but I be sure to still have the healthy amount of fear I need to keep myself safe

True, death makes us question everything...also fearful and sad. I am religious but once I started to doubt it and that sent me in a panic state. I think now we know just a little fragment from reality. Hundreds of years ago people had no clue about electricity, bacteria, relativity, etc....so I just accepted that I don't know the point of life and I can't help not happening milion of things and just try to enjoy/survive one day at a time
