First therapy session for chronic illness

I had my first session with a behavioral therapist that specializes in seeing chronically ill patients today. I was really nervous all night because I get nervous about any kind of medical appointment. My actual session was great, though I was still a bit withdrawn. I've never really done therapy before so I'm uncomfortable sharing everything that's been on my mind. I think this will help me a lot. what experience do you guys have with therapy? anyone with experience for therapy targeted at chronic illness or just in general. I would love to hear your story

I’ve seen multiple therapists over the past 15 years or so, and I’ve had both positive and negative experiences. I think a lot can really depend on whether a therapist and client are a good match and whether a therapist has much knowledge and experience with a client’s particular concerns. Maybe the most helpful therapy experience I’ve had was the most recent one, because those factors matched up well. The therapist was a younger woman, like me, and she works out of my gynecologist’s office and has a special interest in sexual health issues, which was perfect because I wanted to see her because of a chronic sexual health condition that was impacting my emotional health. So I would say, if it turns out you aren’t feeling it with this therapist, try another one (seriously, it won’t hurt a good therapist’s feelings)! But I’m optimistic, since they specialize in chronic illness. I hope you have a positive, beneficial experience!!

I have been to therapy for about 3 years now. The first thing I would ask is if they plan on leaving soon. It’s hard to switch therapists and I just now found one who even said herself without me asking that she had been doing it for 10 years and doesn’t plan on leaving. She saw how many therapists quit on me. I’ve had bad experiences with therapists but I’ve also had good ones
