Seeking Autism Diagnosis as an Adult - Worried About Being Believed

For autistic women or AFAB folks, what was your experience with getting a diagnosis? Especially if you were diagnosed as an adult. I’m about to schedule an appointment to get assessed. I worry that I won’t be believed even though I’ve done my research and know I meet all the diagnostic criteria.

Thank you. It’s awful that we both have these worries but it’s nice to not be alone. If you ever want to talk about it feel free to message me. (Also your username is great)

I got diagnosed in September and it took forever fighting with my GP to help me get it. I realized at the time I was still masking (my mom was with me) but I apparently had everything a bit too organized. I had a fear I wouldn't be believed too because I did so much research and organized it so much

when I was a child, my parents asked specialists if they thought I was autistic and they said no. fast forward to age 19, I finally got diagnosed by my psychiatrist who i had for years, and everything finally made sense. so in my experience, when you're afab, they won't just give you the diagnosis, you have to seek it out yourself.

I’m waiting for my assessment I’ve done the written assessment that you send in. I’m 34 and like you I’m worried I won’t be on the spectrum since I don’t have all the symptoms when you look them up
