HS & PCOS: How Do They Interact?

HS & PCOS- I know they are comorbid in many cases. They are for me. Anyone else have these two? How do they work in your body? Does one trigger the other? Are they related? I find I get some of my worse HS flares around my period. Which is never at a good time or a regular time. How do yours interact and how do you deal?

do you take any meds for either? My derm mentioned putting me on birth control but I really don't want to put my body thru that. I just started taking azithromycin yesterday in hopes that it clears up bc I only have 15 pills haha.

Elevated androgens contribute to HS. I also think my insulin resistance (now T2 diabetes) also heavily contributes because when I don’t manage it well I get flares (idk why exactly but inflammation is definitely an important factor)

were you diagnosed with PCOS or diabetes first? I also have insulin resistance and now now prediabetes. I know my androgens were wayy out of whack when I was first diagnosed (13 years ago) but I haven't been to an endocrinologist since then. So idk. But back then I was on spironolactone which I've heard helps both HS and PCOS. But idk what doc to talk to about that. I am having a a terrible flare right now- I think I have 10 moderate to severe spots at this moment ranging from an inflamed quarter to an oversized golf ball. I just had to start my antibiotics that I keep around that I try not to use. I'm not scheduled to see my derm until June!

I’m wondering if the increased prostaglandin production (increased inflammation) during period could be an explanation for why periods trigger it for you

I've heard something like that before about the hormones. Do you see a specific specialty of Dr for your HS/PCOS?

do they fit together? Like one triggers the next? Or are they just random?

I have both. HS is worse around my period (when I used to have one). I don't have periods anymore due to birth control and skipping the plesabo week. I also take spironolactone for the HS which has helped a huge amount. When I had covid my hs flared worse then ever in my life and has been a pretty big issue since. 🙃

there were about 3 years where I collectively had like 4 periods in that time and they were not more than 3 days a long. My body almost would act like it was starting during this time but never actually bleeding. Just all the other symptoms. And I don't remember my HS any better. Or worse I suppose. Did your derm prescribe spiro? I did actually hear that about COVID! Mine did too! My flares something terrible for the 2 weeks I was sick but it went back to their normalness after I got better. At least.. If I remember correctly it was a year ago so I could be wrong. Without your period, does it flare less around the time it would usually come? Or just a different cycle?

I only found out recently! And I really dug into research and there is a TON of overlap. Like a ton that I never would have thought about! But now makes a lot of sense bc hormones suckkkkkk. And I wonder how penis owners flare since no period/PCOS and totally diff hormones.
