Hyoscyamine for IBS: Anyone tried it?

Has anyone ever taken hyoscyamine for IBS? Just got prescribed it and I’m hopeful but skeptical. I’ve tried a lot of medications. Does this work?

I was prescribed the immediate release version last December for my PoTS syndrome (my cardiologist knew I also have a lot of gi issues and mast cell) and it has worked great for IBS, Mast Cell and PoTS. It’s calms my gi from getting spastic without causing me constipation. It helps with flares of mast cell and it calms my vegus nerve which helps with my potsy symptoms. It’s one of the few things I’ve been prescribed in my medical journey that has really helped and didn’t add on some other major side effect. Hoping it works just as well for you! 🙌

this makes me very hopeful for this medication! I was worried about getting constipated since that happens to me sometimes, os that’s good to hear. I’ve also read up on the vagus nerve so realizing this medication will help that “gut-brain communciation” is also comforting. I’ve really struggled over the past 5 years to find anything except food eliminations that help my ibs so i’m excited to try this. Thank you for your response ☺️

I’ll be honest, I’ve been on this for about six months now and it’s a little hit and miss for me. I’ve taken it several times and felt the exact same, but other times it feels like a miracle worker and can help alleviate horrible stomach cramps. For me, it mainly helps when I know for sure I’m going to be eating something new/potentially triggering and I make sure to have one or two before eating. It has Definitly eased some of the pain though, and it works differently for everyone so for sure worth a try! Best of luck and I hope it helps you!!!

thanks! This helps because i wasnt sure when to take it really. My doctor just said take it as you need it but i feel like being pre-emptive is more effective!

totally agree with you. My stomach only works at 40%. I eat 1 meal a day w yogurt & snacks the rest of the time. I don’t get hungry till 3 or so. I don’t eat a lot of sugar, no acidic foods, marinara, pizza, spicy, no coffee, soda etc. The z Dr said nothing raw at all, it doesn’t digest. I haven’t had a salad in almost 5 yrs. The better lettuce the worst it is for me. It’s very hard to eat meats, I hate it! So I eat different cards. No quinoa- it kills me!! I choke a lot so I eat carefully.

*in addition to my last response I absolutely think this works better than other medications! It provides relief for me about 60% of the time which is way more than any other medications have! It’s progress for sure!!!

I LOVE it!! No one ever prescribed it for me then 3 yrs ago a GI Dr asked why I wasn’t taking it. I feel like I have a alien or baby inside it will move so much! I’m 58 so doubtful it’s something! 😉 I have been taken off ALL raw foods. That has caused constipation for me. My weight will flex about. 10 lbs when it’s a flare. Plus the gas is embarrassing 😳 & horrible. My stomach works at 40% from my last tests in the fall. It actually hurts & impacts my life. I can’t have very much sugar or it causes diarrhea. Then if I walk too long, things are going up or out. It’s unreal.

thank you for you response! I also went 5 years being diagnosed with IBS, seeing 5 different doctors, and my current doctor who I’ve been with for 2 years was like, try this! So I’m hopeful haha. Could I ask what test you take to determine your stomach’s working capacity? 😄 that’s fascinating to me! Because I also burp a lot and someone told me that’s because Im not digesting food properly but then digestive enzymes did nothing! I also avoid raw foods but mostly because they give me stomach cramps and gas and generally taste worse than cooked foods 😂 i can’t tell you how many times I also felt like i had an alien inside me (like the movie!) it’s so scary!! Glad to hear Im not alone but also hope you’ve found things that help and continue to evolve with this condition. Be well 💕
