Iron Pill Side Effects: Swelling and Difficulty Swallowing

I've started to notice when I take my iron pill my throat or thyroid starts to swell and its fells like I can't swallow but I can still swallow, its feels as if I have a lump in my throat... Can iron pills cause Esophagitis... or is this like a allergic reaction

Sounds like you might be allergic. I have chronic anemia and mast cell disease. Ended up having to stop iron because of the constant reactions. Not tolerating iron is unfortunately common.

There are different kinds of iron. If talk to a doctor or maybe pharmacist. Side note: I just learned iron works better it you take it with juice. The vitamin c helps the body absorb the iron.

@Gracieee if you're having negative reactions I would contact you're doctor letting them know so you can stop taking it. What I did was stop anemia treatment and instead monitor the levels and get iron infusions as needed. That said I went through many types of iron before having to switch to infusions due to current negative reactions from oral iron. Talking to your Dr will help you know what options you have for treatment

I had a gastric bypass surgery so I have to take a special iron ( DUE TO MALABSORPTION ISSUES) I think it might help ALOT of people because it's made for BETTER ABSORPTION.. IT'S " EASY IRON " ( Iron Glycinate) 28mg. They are capsules. I happen to buy mine through " Puritans Pride( mail order) . But, you can find these at SOME stores... This formula comes with Vit C, FolateDFE , Folic Acid, Vit B12. I know this formula is easier on the stomach ( one thing us bypass patients have to look out for!!) Capsules, so no hard shell to pass ...immediate release. Keeps my levels 👍good . Better to take this THAN RISK IRON INFUSIONS( WARNED US B4 THE BYPASS SURGERY) .

^^infusions are definitely a last resort. Trying easy iron along with smaller doses throughout the day all are safer options. Figuring out what works best for your body and symptoms can be hard so definitely try different combinations of anemia treatment

Is it ur throat or could it be your tonsils?

@babydior02 the swollen and feeling of a lump is like right under my chin, so the top of where your throat is. And its not even when I take my iron anymore its just a everyday thing now

I think it might be worthwhile to see a doctor to see if there really is an esophagitis. I wonder if it has to do with the iron or maybe with the pill configuration. I recommend you try to take a liquid iron, I drink it along with orange juice which also increases its absorption.
