Struggling with Lactose Intolerance Postpartum

I’ve been lactose intolerant since I was 12 years old. During my first pregnancy I suddenly became tolerant! Postpartum however my intolerance got EVEN WORSE. Even taking 3 Lactaid pills aren’t helping. Any suggestions? Also no I will not give up pizza.

This may sound weird but when I'm craving icecream I eat it right before I fall asleep. I mean like go to sleep immediately after, idk how it works but I think it has something to do with the body being forced to digest the dairy and it not being able to just go right through me. In general tho I save all my dairy products for the evening so that I'm not to busy to run to the bathroom!

It may be that you aren't having an issue with lactose anymore and now it's an issue with the cheese or maybe the cultures in the cheese. That would especially make sense if you have this problem with cheesy foods and not creamy foods (e.g. pizza vs. Ice cream) Definitely something to mention to your doc tho! Especially if you see a GI specialist

@Nanay_Chey, I agree with @snowy. I was thinking maybe it’s more so to fats or sugar intolerance too. I didn’t understand for so long why lactaid never worked for me. I realize now my body doesn’t fair well with grease, fat and sugars too. I also say mention it to your docs. They might have a different reason even to give you. Good luck!

There are some good vegan cheeses out there now. That’s what I do. Good Plant and Diaya 👍🏼 also the Cabot brand of cheese (it’s only cheddars, sharp cheddars, and pepper jacks I think) they’re naturally lactose free so I choose those too and they’re real cheese! Hope this helps, I also am lactose intolerant and feel your pain with the pizza!

I know it doesn’t work for some people as much, but I’m only mildly lactose intolerant, and just one Lactaid pill always helps me, even after I eat/drink dairy. If I have something with dairy without knowing it and start feeling queasy, I just pop a Lactaid, and BOOM. Instant relief. Also, try lactose-free dairy. Lactose-free milk and cheese is available at most grocery stores. Cabot brand cheese is always lactose-free, and also goat dairy has less lactose than cow dairy. It’s much more expensive but often worth it. It tastes better and creamier too IMHO.
