Losing words on Topamax: anyone else?

Hello! I'm curious: does anyone else have the 'losing words' side effect with Topamax? (Topiramate) If so, what have you done to lessen the impact of it, if anything? Have you, like me, noticed it only happens with your native language? (In my case, English) I'm learning multiple other languages, and haven't noticed any issues in any other language. When I lose words, though, my usual go-to is to switch to ASL. (Bonus of being HoH)

This is my second go around with taking topamax and yeah - it definitely happens. My doctor even calls it dope-a-max cuz it really can make you feel like one. The first time I was on it, I had to stop it because it was affecting my job (healthcare) when I couldn't think straight and remember words. This time, I titrated up much, much slower and I didn't have nearly as much of an issue. It was also 10 years later...

Hi! New here first post. I take Topamax as well and it’s absolutely terrible for your short term memory. That’s just my opinion and my experience. I have been using it for 7’ish years maybe more and my short term is shot! I use to get the most dreadful migraines before I went on. I had a month of rebound headaches before I started. Since I started they have been under total control. I have tried unsuccessfully to get off only to have them come back. I’m currently trying to cut down from my twice a day to once a day. Being 52 and not being able to find words and rewatching shows because I can’t remember if I watched them is not working for me. Sending gentle hugs to all the warriors. 🤗

I really thought I was crazy when I couldn’t remember words I was trying to say when talking to family members. They all picked on me when I just stopped mid conversation because I couldn’t the word I was going to use. I just thought I needed to work more on brain games and such. I honestly didn’t even know this was a side effect. Thank you for sharing.

I never knew this was a side effect. I have taken the medication for over 10 years and just thought that me losing words was stress related from being a special needs mom. You all just made me feel 100x better and less guilty!!! Thank you!!!
