Managing Communication Without a Therapist

Without a therapist, is there anyway I can manage talking with people? As communication and tone are the hardest things for me, and seeing as I currently am waiting for a therapist, I'm on my own

If you mean in the sense of socializing, I have found that prefacing a conversation by saying that I am a very literal person and that if they don't say something explicitly I may misunderstand, it tends to result in them being more patient and accommodating then if I were to have said that I am autistic. If you have the social confidence to do that, it may help conversations go more smoothly with less pressure on you to do all of the interpreting

I think the idea of telling someone you're very literal and struggle with tone and also with understanding that's a good idea. And people who know you and see you regularly are more likely to get it/remember that way too. There are also peer support resources (Peer Support Space is one but it's not specifically for autistic people) and also autistic coaches. There are also autistic Facebook groups that can be helpful. There's one called Ask an Autistic and another called Ask a Neurotypical (I think). A reminder that trying to directly change your tone and communication style can also be painful in a different way, because masking is really hard. But it is technically possible for some, and necessary for some too. 💜

Is autistic coach and peer support space websites or part of Facebook?
