Memory Loss with Bipolar Disorder

Sincere question... does anyone else experience memory loss with bipolar disorder? I've never met anyone else that deals with it.

Yes!!! Like so often, I think that’s why I was misdiagnosed with add as a kid.

wow! I experience it so badly on the daily. I struggle with both small memories and big memories, a long time ago, and even like a day ago. It gets so confusing and frustrating

i do, but it's more as part of borderline than bipolar... borderline has dissociation as one of its symptoms after all. you might check that out and see if you think it fits you... might be a good thing to bring up to a mental health professional if so. even if not, you should mention the memory loss. it's most likely dissociation and i experience it the same way as you described in your reply to anon

Oh absolutely, but oddly enough my memory will sometimes recover? When I’m having a depressive episode I forget things all the time, I’ll have friends say “remember this..” and I’ll have no recollection at all, or I’ll constantly zone out and forget what I was doing or saying, and the things that have helped me the most have been journaling and making lots of lists, i’d recommend giving that a try and see if that helps in the short term and you might have some long term memories come back with time

I have dissociative amnesia and adhd. My memory is poop. I've never heard of memory issues related to bipolar disorder though.

Absolutely! There’s about a six month period that I can hardly recall. I often have trouble remembering what happened when. Honestly I think the pandemic made a lot of those problems worse. I felt much more alone and when I spend too much time in my head I forget what’s happening around me.

Yes! The episodes themselves, switching between them, the strain of medication, and the anxiety that comes with all of these can interrupt short and long term memory. It can come and go, too, though.
