Choosing a Career in Mental Health with Bipolar Disorder

Any other mentally ill smarties that chose to study psych/social work? I have been struggling with my mental health my whole life, and when I found psychology as a teenager I remember feeling so seen. I decided to get my bachelor's in psych and I'm graduating in December. I'm trying to decide what I want to do next, and recently I've been leaning toward clinical social work. It doesn't pay great and would probably be pretty stressful but i don't think I will be satisfied unless I'm helping people (which is why I gave up on research). I also want to teach. Any advice on dealing with stressful jobs as a manic-leaning bipolar person? or perhaps other job recs? I considered clinical psych but it's basically the same field but takes longer to get the degree so idk I'm patient lol

hey! im about to graduate next semester as a clinch psych major. it is def longer to get a degree because you have to go onto a masters program to really be able to get a good job. having ur own therapist def helps to process all the tough things you will see. also take time for yourself & have a nice relaxing bedtime routine helps me. i hope some of this helped & feel free to dm me!:)

I can relate to this! I love to put logical application to what’s going on and bring in emotions to create an integrated balance and find work arounds. I have been doing more along the lines of life coaching so that I get the best of both worlds- teaching, helping others, and prioritizing taking care of myself. I feel like the reach is also greater because of the lack of access and hoops for more clinical work. Obviously there are drawbacks as well and the increase in responsibility is greater because of the lack of certification and oversight. Whatever you do, I hope you feel like you’re living out your purpose, find fulfillment, and help others do the same🙏🏻

They're lots of ways to help people. I almost got my degree but ended up working with adults with special needs and I love it. I would talk to your favorite teacher and ask what they think would be the best path for you and what does that path look like
