Overcoming Barriers to Medical Care as a Medical Student with Somatization Disorder

Hi I’m 20 and from the UK and my main barriers are in getting doctors to believe me whilst also balancing my anxieties about health problems with the reality of what I am experiencing. I have been diagnosed with somatization disorder which I’m currently fighting because I don’t actually fit the diagnostic criteria. I’m also a medical student so I’m trying to use my experiences to improve my future practise.

I looked up what that disorder was and all I can say is it sounds like complete bullshit. I would be so angry and hurt if a doctor tried to blame all my issues and health ailments on something like that. My heart goes out to you. I would get a second opinion as soon as possible, maybe even a new Doctor entirely. Keep your head up.

I was diagnosed with conversion disorder so I am in the same boat. One thing I just read though made me feel comforted "People with SSD are not faking their symptoms. The distress they experience from pain and other problems they experience are real, regardless of whether or not a physical explanation can be found. And the distress from symptoms significantly affects daily functioning."

I’m 20 as well living in the UK however im a international student. I have often even from being from Norway struggled to be believed by doctors both for physical and mental issue. But the UK is on a next level. I am struggling so hard to get any type of help in the uk for a year now, and it makes me frustrated and down. You need to just push through even if they give an attitude. Be direct and in my opinion show your anger frustration because the system is an absolute joke. And I’m so sorry you have to go through it, put keep on going
