PMDD Diagnosis: Is it Worth It?

I just googled “why do i get _______ before my period” and say PMDD pop up. is this something most people diagnose themselves with? i can’t say for sure if that’s what is causing my symptoms, but i don’t find it worthwhile to go to the doctor about it. anyone that is professionally diagnosed - is it worth it? what was the diagnostic process like? i can’t imagine there is any treatment.

Can you help? Connect today

hello! I was diagnosed by my general doctor at my yearly check up, and I also got the diagnosis from my psychiatrist. it was pretty simple, as for me it was very clearly the week before my period, and that’s all they really needed to know. that being said, you could probably self diagnose if it’s very consistently during that time. as for treatment, I am being treated for it with an antidepressant and mood stabilizer and it has helped me a lot. however, those were prescribed to me for both my pmdd and generalized anxiety, so idk if that affects it. I found treatment really beneficial. for so long I felt like for those weeks I was slowly becoming a danger to myself, so if you feel it’s getting in the way of your life, and you are open to treatment, I would recommend reaching out to a doctor.

I was diagnosed very easily by my gyn. I was there for something unrelated and mentioned how depressed I get during PMS week and have intrusive thoughts. She explained it was called PMDD and suggested supplements or birth control. The supplements didn't work for me so I got birth control from my PCP. Between that and my antidepressant, the PMDD symptoms improved. I still get pretty down, but don't have the intrusive thoughts.

It is an easy diagnosis, however it is also VERY easily misdiagnosed. You want to check with your doctor to be sure it isn’t something else that could mean more serious health concerns if overlooked. You also want to be sure it is not just something that should level itself out/more common than you might realize.

My therapist saw the pattern and just told me to keep track and show it at my next check up and doc was like yeah sound likes it. Theres not tests really. And they give you option of depression meds. But I’m using flo vitamins and it’s helping.
