Preparing for EMDR Therapy: Tips and Advice

Hey guys, I will begin EMDR Therapy this week and I’m super nervous as my therapist said it’s very emotionally draining. Not quite sure if I’m ready for it, but what did you do to prepare yourself for it, if you did anything at all?

Make sure you have the mindfulness skills built; I do "container" to visualize where I put the feelings after the session and "safe place" meditation to calm down afterwards. I would liken the whole thing to having your therapist dunk your head into the troubling memories, then fish you out to breath, then dunking you back in. I find it helps with processing, despite being intense. Remember you'll be safe the whole time.

In my experience it was very physically exhausting but it did pay off in the long run. If you ever feel like it's too much make sure to tell your therapist. Good luck!
