Anyone taking Aderall? I just got prescribed for my ADHD but I’m scared to take it because of my EDS.

Can you help? Connect today

I take ritalin not exactly the same but similar. ADHD can actually cause problems with adhd because it can effect muscle tone. I’ve noticed my Hypermobility is worse when I’m not taking my adhd meds.

So basically all ADHD meds are the same chemical, Vyvanse is just wrapped in L-Lysine so it has a more even, extended distribution. What are you scared of, in regards to EDS? I don't understand the correlation. Do you have cvEDS? Or extreme POTS?

SAMHAIN: I don’t know where I read that but somehow Hypermobility and adhd are related and aggravated by each other. I could be wrong about it being muscle tone but treating one usually helps the other

ADHD is a dopamine production/regulation disorder. EDS is a connective tissue/mainly collagen production disorder? One is mental one is physical. ADHD being a spectrum disorder implies there could be higher likelihood of comorbidities incl POTS or proprioception problems, dysautonomia, etc... But to be honest that's all muchhhhh closer correlative to autism spectrum disorder than ADHD. Amphetamines will exacerbate POTS bc of circulatory/cardio issues, but saying "hypermobility"—aka hyperextension or hyperflexion of joints due to poor connective tissue—and ADHD are related or aggravated *by* each other is an inaccurate statement/assessment. And I'm here to tell ya that treating one mosttttttt cerrrrrtainly does not treat the other.

Also: prefrontal cortex & anterior cingular cortex developmental disorder. But, still, those are not directly correlative with collagen production nor musculature surrounding/supporting joint stability. So. Idk where you heard that?

Per wiki for Lisdexamfetamine: «In healthy people at oral therapeutic doses, amphetamine has been shown to increase muscle strength, acceleration, athletic performance in anaerobic conditions, and endurance (i.e., it delays the onset of fatigue), while improving reaction time.[50][54][55] Amphetamine improves endurance and reaction time primarily through reuptake inhibition and release of dopamine in the central nervous system.[54][55][56] Amphetamine and other dopaminergic drugs also increase power output at fixed levels of perceived exertion by overriding a "safety switch", allowing the core temperature limit to increase in order to access a reserve capacity that is normally off-limits.[55][57][58] At therapeutic doses, the adverse effects of amphetamine do not impede athletic performance;[50][54] however, at much higher doses, amphetamine can induce effects that severely impair performance, such as rapid muscle breakdown and elevated body temperature.[59][54]» So, i suppose I stand corrected to some extent. I guess i wasn't thinking about "speed" just "improving function" overall bc... Speed. 🤣 🙏

I’ve actually found that Adderall XR has helped with my pain, it helps me focus on the task at hand rather than my mind immediately wandering back to my pain, and also helps with motivation on especially bad days.

My psychologist would posit: "But, that's more helping the *attention* itself and where it's directed, or your ability to steer it, rather than actuslly treating the *source* of the pain (EDS) itself..."

Wow thank you all for the responses! I’m nervous about it because I’ve had heart inflammation from EDS that was triggered by an epipen shot so I’m scared to take anything that is a stimulant? The doctor said Adderall makes your heart have palpitations at first and that really scared me

Which is your particular subtype, vEDS? Do you have an underlying heart condition? Otherwise, your inflammation was likely not due to/from EDS, but was most probably the EpiPen itself, because that is not a side effect—it is the direct effect of the medication. It decreases inflammation everywhere ★else★ by way of increasing pressure inside the heart itself to boost blood flow and therefore dispersal. "Epinephrine works by reversing the symptoms of anaphylaxis. For example, a person's blood pressure plummets during an anaphylactic reaction because the blood vessels relax and dilate — epinephrine causes the blood vessels to constrict, which raises blood pressure" —Mylan, the maker of EpiPens "Hence, epinephrine causes constriction in many networks of minute blood vessels but dilates the blood vessels in the skeletal muscles and the liver. In the heart, it increases the rate and force of contraction, thus increasing the output of blood and raising blood pressure.” —Britannica Heart inflammation from a shot of epinephrine seems to me like the usual direct effect for anyone, not just zebras... but I'm not a doctor 🤷

"Heart palpitations" means "heart beats fast" Not necessarily anything to worry about. "Fast heartbeat" goes away, it doesn't necessarily imply anything about future interactions by itself in your history. Afib is different. But that's particularly a type of palpitation which is determined by electrical changes in your heart. To your point: Yes, of course starting a stimulant Rx stimulates your heart; but in the first week most individuals have adjusted to the difference and the little rushes of energy/heartbeat/possible sweatiness subsides. It's common to experience it again to a lesser extent each time you titrate, but it's nothing to worry about unless it is sustained for a long period of time or displays to a reasonably dangerous degree. Otherwise, by your doctor's logic, people should not run, or exercise, or kiss people either because it might make their heart race. 😅

My mom has ADHD and EDS and takes Adderall. From an outside perspective, it works excellently at treating her ADHD and it does not affect her EDS at all. She functions so much better physically and mentally when she has regular access to her medication. I cannot express with words how poorly she does without it. There's no increase or decrease in joint dislocations or subluxations (I know because I'm the one who reduces her large joints when she can't do it herself) and there's no change in her chronic, diffuse joint pain

❤️‍🩹 condolences and solidarity to your mum. It sounds like you're describing me. "Severe ADHD" is no understatement of medical terminology 😮‍💨
