Need advice on how to help a stray cat

hi, this has nothing to do with illnesses but there's a stray cat that comes to my porch for food. I'm trying to find a good time to bring it to the local shelter and get it scanned for a chip. it also has a loss of hair in the back near the tail and some matting. a neighbor is calling it Leche and it's assumed to be a boy, I have no idea how to go about getting it in a carrier. this cat is always seeking shelter and if it wasn't winter and freezing I'd trap it in the Carrier and shut the door and bring it to the vet in the morning (if we can't do it today) but more than likely it would just cause it to freeze. any advice would be amazing. it comes out at early "night" (roughly 5pm and after when it's dark/getting dark)

wear gloves when handling them and try to find out if they are fixed. you are so kind for doing this

if you are worried about the weather you can make an emergency outdoor shelter for them using plastic tubs, Styrofoam, hay, and duct tape. do not put cotton or blankets in there as it can make it colder, but you can drape one over it to keep the wind out đź’ž

I don’t know about your money situation but some people put up cameras like baby monitors. You could also set a trap out and check on it though a window every half hour/hour. Like feellicks said though please wear gloves if you catch him, cats especially wild can carry a lot of diseases. Also know if you do catch him he may be upset to be caught and make a bit of noise or try to break out. With luck he could either belong to someone or be friendly and not have an owner meaning you get a new pet!

@vixly the cat is friendly! Just skiddish. I've noticed it tries to seek shelter a lot so I don't think it will be a problem getting it. I however, so not room to set up a trap anywhere

If it has approached you before, you could wear gloves and have a carrier next to you. Put some food or treats out in front of you and when it comes close quickly grab it? Most cates wouldn’t enjoy that but if you take it to the vet and it gets a home it would be thankful
