Struggling with Identifying as Having BPD

Im not completely sure i have BPD. I relate heavily with people who do, and i've benefited from certain coping mechanisms, but i cant convince myself i have it or what to do about it.

what i did when i suspected i had it was i looked up the diagnosis criteria for it, i don’t remember how many out of the criteria you are supposed to have but it usually says, if you relate to that certain amount and suspect you have it i would talk to someone about it, could be a parent, doctor or therapist and see about getting a diagnosis to get help with it, bpd is awful without management, hope this helps!

Honestly I’d say see a professional. Ik it’s not an easy thing to do but it’s hard for psychiatrists to diagnose nevermind everyday people. Other types of disorders can mimic bpd like unseen autism, adhd, severe anxiety, bipolar, bad depression and even ptsd. That’s why it’s so hard to diagnose because the symptoms are honestly very vague. The most crucial part of getting a diagnosis is working with a professional long term. Like for me personally I had worked with my psychiatrist every 2 weeks for near enough 4 years before he was certain and gave me my diagnosis. It also massively depends on age. There’s are very few cases of people being correctly diagnosed with bpd when younger because it is a cluster b personality disorder meaning the only real way to tell it is infact a disorder of the personality is time. A professional seeing how u act and how u develop as you get older is the only real way to get an accurate diagnosis and with a diagnosis like bpd that already comes with such awful stigma it’s really important for them to be sure before they put that label on you because for some people being incorrectly diagnosed with bpd destroys everything they think of themselves and the ways others treat them. I know that shouldn’t be the way but sadly bpd is one of the things a lot of professionals may treat you differently for having so it’s really important that they get it right. Also because most teenagers actually will meet the criteria for bpd at some point and ofc not a lot of em actually have it that does mean they generally wait til you’re older to even discuss the possibility of a personality because a lot of them aswell know u get treated different. I once spoke to a different psychiatrist and I mentioned I have bpd and she said “yk I don’t diagnose bpd. I just personally don’t think a personality disorder diagnosis is ever helpful” so it also varies in the opinion of each individual professional. Overall if you are genuinely concerned speak to your gp and see if they can set you up with somebody but I do warn you it is sadly an extremely long process of them assessing you so best of luck to you and I hope you feel better soon (:
