Does taking vitamin D actually help? Need advice.

Now for those that are taking vitamin D does it help, like I've been taking it for the past 10 to 8 years. now wouldn't you think if it actually was helping or worked you wouldn't have to take them anymore & the directions says take with a full glass of milk like 😑 I'm lactose intolerant how am I supposed to drink milk guess that's the reason I have to take it & am vitamin deficiency..
