Struggling with Trichotillomania: Can't Stop Picking Scabs and Pimples

Anyone here with Trichtillomania? I wanted to know has anyone else here never let a scab heal on its own without picking? Or can never leave pimples alone? I’ve managed to leave about 2 pimples alone my whole life.

Can you help? Connect today

Yes!! I have a big thing about scratching hairs out of my legs. Such a struggle. I find wearing pants all the time helps me so I can’t see my legs

Yep! (I mostly pull out my eyebrows and eyelashes) I also have Dermatillomania (Excoriation Disorder), and I do the same with not allowing scabs to heal. I can't even leave the scars alone sometimes 😅

I’ve had Trichotillomania for over ten years. I mainly pull at the hair on my head. I do find myself picking at ingrown hairs on my legs and I used to have a lot of trouble leaving acne alone but as I’ve gotten older I’ve found it to be a bit easier to leave my face alone. Especially after seeing how acne scars effected my self confidence. I still struggle a lot with my hair and rarely leave my hair down because of it. I haven’t been able to fine any good solutions so far.

Something that has helped me is wearing bandanas and scarves that cover my scalp so i don’t pick at it absent mindedly and not be able to stop. When I had a partner we had a rule that if they saw me doing it they would verbally call it out and make me stop and I actually would if that happened. I am no longer in a relationship though.

Yeah like idk what to do about it or if i have to address it through meds or what. i’ve been through some pretty serious trauma so all my therapists have wanted to talk about that way more than when i bring this stuff up. they seem to think it’s not that bad comparatively but it’s really a real problem for me.

I have some family members that know about it and they do say something as well, if they see me pulling my hair. It’s helpful in stressful situations like family get togethers or parties (I have anxiety and that is a trigger for me). If you have a roommate it would be helpful.

Pey10: maybe ask them about other forms of therapy that can help. There is a behavioral therapy that I have been told can help. I haven’t tried it but I have heard about it from friends. First step is figuring out what triggers you. Places, times of day, activities, people, etc.

My trich appeared suddenly at 21 years old & I haven't found relief (8 years later).

It is by far the most treatment-resistant condition I have & because of that also the most burdensome
