Dealing with Upsetting Thoughts While Running Errands

Yesterday I agreed to run errand with my mom today. Since I started my morning I’ve been trying to be productive but I’m the back of my mind I’m being plagued with upsetting thoughts. Im trying not to focus on them but it’s been hours and they still haven’t left. I don’t want to deal with it while I’m running errands today. Please give me some advice to get thru this.

It may help to coexist with them. As in accept them and say "its happening again". These thoughts suck, but they usually can't be controlled and doing so can make it worse. Mental exercises such as imagining the thoughts on a truck driving off into the sunset until you can't see it anymore can help as well. A way of acknowledging their existance and letting go. If you don't have a therapist, it may be something to look into or try.

I usually just think about how I can make the person I’m hanging out with feel better so I feel better too. Unless they’re abusive, then I tend to ask them to leave and finish the things that need to get done on my own. Whenever I make someone else feel better, it makes me feel better and since I’m feeling better it’s easier to block out the scary stuff. It’s a lot easier than it sounds, I hope this helps and I hope you have a great and productive day.
