Considering Weight Loss Surgery Before My Wedding

Hello, I’m Ginger. My weight started at 269 and I am 5’6. I am getting things done so I can have the gastric sleeve surgery done at Vanderbilt. I have lost as of yesterday 26 pounds on my own which I feel is a great accomplishment but my goal is 150z I’m getting married on May 5th. It’s hard for me to add exercises into my diet routine bc of my fibromyalgia and migraines. Would you have surgery now or wait until after wedding on May 5th? Thank you and great to be here. Ginger.

Hi Ginger! I had gastric sleeve surgery in 2012. At first it was awesome and I lost really well..then it started to slow down after about a 35 lb loss. It was ok but in 2014 they found a large benign tumor in my spine that after surgery and rehab my weight loss stopped and I slowly started gaining again ( a lot has to do with limited mobility now I’m sure). Anyways…I’ve managed to keep about 20 lbs off from starting weight but wanted to warn u of GERD. I did not have this until after the sleeve and it’s very common after any bariatric surgery but it’s not fun!! I’m stuck taking omeprazole for life now and that’s not a great medication to be on long term for many reasons but if I try to not take it the heartburn comes back severely. Now as far as your wedding.. are u going on an awesome honeymoon with lots of good food? If so, I’d wait!! Surgically you’d be ok but the first few months u will have things like dumping syndrome and not able to eat much which will hamper your fun! Just my two cents! I have fibromyalgia now too btw so I hear u on the exercise! Just try to diet a bit to lose a few more lbs before wedding and put off sleeve til the festivities are over and u can focus more on the weight loss/rules of eating /supplements etc then! Good luck!

Dear Mandm, thank you for all this information regarding GERD. I’m having gastric sleeve also and I already have GERD really bad. I’m glad you think I need to wait for the surgery bc after the wedding we are on our way to New Orleans on a cruise. Magnificent food!!! Thanks again for your truthful response!!!❤️

When I first began exercising, I couldn’t do 5 minutes on an Exercycle but I did it every day and gradually built up. You can do it. Exercise is the only thing that consistently makes a difference.

I'm thinking of having this surgery this year too. What is dumping syndrom? I already have IBS w/ diarrhea. Plus I'm diabetic and worring about keeping my sugar up. Congratulations on your wedding and I think mandm gave you food advice.

The dumping syndrome is when you eat way too many sugars and carbs and not enough of the good foods we’re supposed to eat like rosins and veggies. You eat that stuff and almost immediately it runs right through you. Therefore you don’t absorb any of the nutrients from what you have just eaten and it can make you sole.

Congrats on losing 26 lbs!! Since your wedding is only a few months away, I would wait until after your wedding to have surgery. You’ll want time to recover and take it easy, and the months leading up to your wedding you’ll probably have a lot to do.

She_She_Kay that dumping syndrome is not fun. When I are finally able to eat food again and getting a craving for something “bad” it will keep u from enjoying it that’s for sure! Having IBS with that would be pretty miserable but it won’t happen much if u stick to the guidelines as much as possible. As far as diabetes.. u will be drinking your meals in the beginning that are nutritionally sound so no worries. U may even get rid of the diabetes like I did ( but it came back after I gained again). I do get low blood sugar feelings more often since surgery but interestingly when I check it’s actually high?! Very weird cuz I have felt all the symptoms of low. I think because even 8 years out now I still can’t eat very large meals at all so it’s real important to eat your proteins first!

WxLover Even my doctor said it was not worth the trouble to go through. He said it was to messy? That's why I haven't done anything yet. It sounds horrible lol.

WxLover I felt like I had no control of my eating and it sounded like a dream! You literally can’t eat large amounts ever again! But yeah.. there’s def negatives to it too. I think therapy would’ve helped me more lol
