Worried about my feeding tube and TPN

I have a feeding tube and a pick line to help with multiple heath conditions. I recently started TPN and a few other thing but I am really worried that they aren’t working. What should I do? My doctor says that if I drop anymore weight I will need to go inpatient to a intensive inpatient program and I really don’t want that.

What makes you think that they’re not working? Does your tube looks like it’s blocked? Maybe you should ask for a TPN formula with more calories…

There are a lot of ways to see if the PICC and tube feeds are helping. It’s going to take some time for your body to adjust to the added nutrients before you physically see weight gain. If it’s possible to check your electrolyte levels (usually a blood test) and different lab levels that will tell you how your body is functioning overall. As your body starts getting more nutrients through your tube feeds and PICC line then you might notice weight gain. It could take a few alterations in formula to get the right fit.

That makes complete sense. It’s not the way we are all “used” to receiving nutrients. It’s more complicated and not as simple as looking at the back of the back to see what vitamins you’re getting. It’s also a lot different than taking things in by mouth which is what we are taught to do our whole lives. It makes complete sense to be concerned about getting everything you need. Is a nutritionist working with your medical team to pick your tube feeds and TPN? It might help talking to them about the specifics of your products so you know what you’re getting?
